22nd
Annual Agriculture and Natural Resources Youth Workshop
Hosted by Coarsegold RCD, April 7, 2011
On Thursday, April 7th High school
students from around the area participated in the 22nd annual
Agricultural and Natural Resources Youth Workshop.
This year the event was held at Minarets High School in the Media
Center and around the grounds; though in the past this event has been held
at the CSUF Experimental Range and Scout Island. 22 students and 15 adults
participated this year from Minarets High School, Mountain Home School,
Selma High School, and Coalinga High School. This event is a local day
long workshop to provide information while emphasizing the importance of
our natural resources. The way we manage our natural resources such as
soil, water, air, plants, and animals is critical in determining our
present and future welfare. The workshop included presentations from
professionals of Forestry, Wildlife, Watersheds, Soils, Vegetation, and
Rangeland Management. Students also had the opportunity to compete in an
essay contest for an expense paid trip to the California Range and Natural
Resources Camp at Elkus Ranch in Half Moon Bay in June.
At that week-long camp, students will have the opportunity to
compete for the National Range Camp. This year’s essay contest winner
was Kaylee Anthony from Coalinga High School.
This workshop is free to the students, chaperones,
and presenters and sponsored by the San Joaquin Area Resource Conservation
Districts as well as UC Cooperative Extension, Madera County Fish &
Game, USDA Forest Service, and USDA Natural Resources Conservation
Service.
